Wildly overpraised at the time of its release - sure, it's better than Song Remains the Same, but so are Yesshows and Chicago IV Live at Carnegie Hall - this offers some fine performances, but the simultaneously released DVD (entitled simply Led Zeppelin) is superior. Recorded and released at the beginning of Shock and Awe, this is a well-meaning but incredibly hokey affair. Still, I never doubt Dolly's sincerity, and while "Ballad of the Green Beret" isn't much of an improvement over Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler's original, I'll take her version of "God Bless the U.S.A." over Lee Greenwood's any old time.chriscmansonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14319932062741341943noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2070307563294059419.post-6523233225549299052008-06-10T13:00:00.000-07:002008-06-10T13:02:09.675-07:00The Remains' Movin' On<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYtdd6AhEbFD12OZyACeLmyM1PZ7u0HpfN99ZpLdwjJ_wD6k2pINegfSTJ-XXQAPS7si2_uJjtFQsPMa95XHIsqwOQHFV7DqGMUTQiclxJaAPHkye43y9a0vrAQWSjD3I75E9RrDZWMmvk/s320/remains.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210345280083962786" />
One reason Barry Tashian and his band's 2002 comeback album works so well is that it's not really a comeback album after all. Pink Floyd were album artists for sure, but they comp nicely. My favorite is "Wish You Were Here," a song whose appeal is so great that a lot of the local bands play it frequently, but as Dylan would say, there's nothing to turn off. Still, nothing here knocks me out as much as David Gilmour's guitar solo on Paul McCartney's "No More Lonely Nights."chriscmansonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14319932062741341943noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2070307563294059419.post-32841784067265881862008-05-28T13:23:00.001-07:002008-05-28T13:26:42.367-07:00Rolfe Kent's Sideways<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim6Cscfv-IrdVVupLzv0DFSePEBTlYJoTxe0DBT4VqolTGCgi_n_bEcXl3TaCYqSyh1Z9xSxMtgiyJCq_k__w9D7COptnz8tXZH0RaRnWJgM_COkp-E7L6bQJppNX3hr6cLR98yjbC8GZf/s320/sideways.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5205527398776148994" />
Score to Alexander Payne's superior comedy is rare in that it works outside the context of the film. The 2007 Rhino reissue includes five bonus tracks, the highlight of which is the extraordinary "Red, White and Blue."chriscmansonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14319932062741341943noreply@blogger.com0
